When I started this blog in March 2008, I was steadily losing my grip, trying to cope with mum's (undiagnosed at that point) dementia and full time work. Prozac eventually saved me from total meltdown and mum spent her last couple of years much more settled in a care home. She died, aged 92, on 10 November 2011. Life will be very different from now on............

Hoo boy. Again with the nastiness. I HOPE the doctor recommends...no, urges!...assisted living.
Me too. I've decided to visit tonight and Tuesday but if she's mean both times, I'll have a day or two off. She was adamant yesterday that I hadn't been the day before so if she can't remember, why go every night? Or will staying away seem like an eternity to her? What to do, what to do.
Shorter visits? With, well, balloons or something? A tangible reminder that you were there, I mean, but short for your own sake. I doubt her sense of time is all that good right now.
This is easy for me to say, since I have a happy go lucky, agreeable AD Mom to deal with. Every other day is probably ok, but two days in between might be pushing it. If she is unpleasant, cut the visit short. Ten or fifteen minutes will give you peace of mind that you've seen her for yourself and know how she is doing. Again, this is very easy for me to say, so take it with a grain of salt. Hugs your way, Lily, you don't have an easy row to hoe.
Very good advice from both, thanks, I intend to follow it. Mum was ok tonight, still looking forward to going home but I let it pass for now. Oddly, she was talking about how strange it would be to go back to Portman Street, as though that were her discharge address - she hasn't lived there since WW2 ended. She didn't seem to have much idea of where she'd lived since, either.
What is "zimmering"?
I have to confess, 'zimmering' is a made-up word, meant to describe the motion of a person travelling from A to B with the aid of a zimmer frame.
I assume a zimmer frame is what Americans call a wheelchair? I suppose I could JFGI that one.
