urrrgh
I'm still off work nursing a sore eye so this will be a quick post. Being at home is not as restful as you might think. I'm back to phone paranoia - 2 days running mum has been asking outright whether she can come and live with us. When I'm not at her's, she phones me to tell me how lonely/miserable etc she is. I'm just leaving the answerphone on. I am a terrible daughter, I know, but its the only way I know how to cope.
Alternatively....give in to the umpteenth phone call but take beloved dog with me as a distraction. Worked fairly well!

Oh, you're not a terrible daughter, far from it! If she were living with you, she'd likely find many more opportunities to complain. She makes you want to avoid her, with that whining....and it is whining.
In one of your previous posts on the subject, you confronted her, I think I remember, with her unpleasantness driving you away. I don't know if it would work to keep hammering that point.

Thanks Emily, I know I should be more assertive but there's always this little voice telling me not to be mean to such an old lady.

I'd go as far as saying she's a terrible mother, and a horrible old woman.

Reminding her to be COURTEOUS is not being mean. It's just a dose of reality. You're hardly actually going to abandon her to starve to death, ya know.
My own mother was terribly self-absorbed as well, but she'd been raised to be a lady, so if she'd had much opportunity to complain, it would have been more passive-aggrsssive. Mercifully my brother lived with her & that got us sibs off the hook.
